A Vintage Rain Scarf and How To Tie It | Vintage Style

I adore vintage fashion from [almost] all decades, but 1950s and 1960s style had something a little extra fun that I admire. Perhaps it is the silhouettes or maybe the color combinations. With spring here I gravitate towards my favorite vintage florals. Today I wanted to share with you this lovely 1960s rain scarf.

Women often wore rain bonnets to protect their hair from spring showers, but they were also known to carry rain scarves from the 1950s through the 1970s. A rain scarf was an acetate or water repellant scarf that protected hairdos from getting wet in the rain.

This spring I thrifted this lovely yellow and green floral rain scarf:

To wear a rain scarf you will fold it in half into a triangle then wrap it around your head, point facing down over your hair.

Cross the two remaining ends under your chin and around to the back…

…and tie it over the point of your triangle to hold down the scarf. I double tie mine to keep it from coming undone as silk scarfs are slippery and untie easily.

And viola! Your hair will be protected form the rain!

The only difference here is that my hair is very long. I could tuck it under the scarf to protect it, but women in the 1950s and 1960s typically had very short hair so the hair scarf was long enough to protect their hairdo.
