The Pont du Gard aqueduct has been on my life list (list of things I want to experience in my lifetime) since high school. This ancient Roman aqueduct was built over the Gardon River halfway through the first century AD! The aqueduct is now a world heritage site and open for guests for only seven Euros for adults. You can still walk across it to the other side using a walkway that was made in the 1800s. In the United States it is rare to be able to get this close to monuments, let alone touch them and swim underneath them. It was truly one of the most magical moments of our honeymoon, and my husband would say one of the best of his life.
It was originally on our honeymoon itinerary, but in an effort to slow down our trip and to not overextend ourselves, it was crossed off and placed on our list for future trips instead. While in Gordes we saw everything we wished to see and we knew we had another day, so we looked it up and discovered that the Pont du Gard was only an hour away. We grabbed our bathing suits, sunscreen, and towels, and piled into our rental car to make the trip.
Look at our amazing first sighting of the aqueduct!
Locals and tourists alike were swimming on two of the beaches, one on each side of the aqueduct.
The terrain under the aqueduct is pretty rocky. After Matthew took his time to jump from the rocks under the aqueduct, we crossed the bridge again to the small pebble beach on the other side where it was less crowded and offered a different view of the arches. To get to the beach you make your way down a walkway, then to a staircase that leads to a watery path no deeper than a foot or two. A magical moment! As the sun lowered in the sky it lit up the aqueduct in shades of gold. We packed up our towels and made our way back to Gordes knowing that we would carry the memories of Pont du Gard in our hearts for a lifetime together.
