With so many books and so little shelving, I do my best to be very intentional with the books that I buy and bring into our home. I have been using our local library and only purchasing the books I know I will want to keep for years to come. Starting last year, I have been catching up on classic literature, especially classic children’s novels that I missed out on in my younger years. Louisa May Alcott books are on my wish list. So when the book club voted on Little Men by Louisa May Alcott as our book of the month pick, I knew that it was a book I would want to add to my collection.
Instead of buying new, I wanted to thrift a book that was already here. I looked through dozens of editions in all price points and in all kinds of conditions. And then I found this lovely Books Inc. 1945 Louisa May Alcott book set for $38. There were six books. I added it to my cart, but wanted to wait for my next paycheck because I’m sticking to my weekly and monthly budget. The next day it was sold and I was disappointed. Later that week I ended up finding the same set, minus one book (Little Women, of course) for $28 on eBay. This time I went for it.
Several days later this lovely five book set arrived:
I chose this set in particular for a few reasons; the affordable price point (for the cost of a new hardcover I got an entire set of five classics), My book club pick of Little Men was included along with it’s sequel Jo’s Boys, and the design was simple and lovely. I adore the floral detail on the spine with the hints of gold.
This set was printed in the mid 1940s. I am going to continue searching for the others in this same set, but this particular Books Inc set has proven hard to track down. No such luck yet.
This set also includes Eight Cousins and it’s sequel, Rose In Bloom. It also has one of my Louisa May Alcott favorites; An Old Fashioned Girl. The profile portrait on the cover is also a lovely detail.
the pages are yellow and worn, but overall it is a very lovely set. It is not antique or even close to a first edition, so they are an affordable option. Thrifting books is a great option over buying new because it is better for the environment, gives new life to old books, and is a more affordable and beautiful way to build a home library.
