It’s October in New England and I am officially in autumn mode. Although it has actually been very warm most days, a few of my autumn jackets have already made an appearance and the rest of my fall clothes are coming out of the hideaway under my stairs by the end of the weak. My favorite way to celebrate the start of the autumn season in New England is to visit a local apple orchard or cider mill for some hot apple cider. I am so happy to start my season premiere to the “Autumn in New England” series, a blog series where I feature the best places to visit this time of year in New England, style tips for fall, where to find the best apple cider donuts, my favorite lesser known apple orchards, and so much more.
Today I am sharing with you a great Cider Mill in Connecticut, that draws in crowds from out of state. B.F. Clyde’s is the perfect autumn destination because the mill is fantastic and there is also so much to see and do in the surrounding area. You can easily spend a handful of days here exploring Mystic, Old Mystic Village, downtown, the historic seaport, the aquarium, seafood shacks, and wineries.
This year we decided to start the season by visiting B.F. Clyde’s Cider Mill in Old Mystic Connecticut, the oldest steam powered cider mill in the entire United States! I’m inviting you on the journey to kick start your autumn in New England adventures. If you needed another reason to love Connecticut or New England in the fall then this place is it. Last year we drove up to Burlington Connecticut for Hogan’s Cider Mill so we decided to try some place new this year.
The machinery, which is still in use today is from 1898! If you visit the Mill at select times, you can even watch an apple pressing demonstration as they prepare the apples to make cider. The cider mill is still owned by the Clyde family, now in it’s sixth generation at the mill. B.F. Clyde’s is also a National Historic Landmark.
There are two shops at Clyde’s as well as numerous booths outdoors featuring local farmers who are selling their honey, syrup, popcorn, and spices. The central building is where you will find their hot apple cider (or cold or iced if you prefer!) and their apple cider donuts. Their hot apple cider is definitely my new favorite in Connecticut. It tasted so amazing!
Stop inside for a jar of their homemade apple butter. Is breakfast in autumn complete without it?
On a nice day take your time and sit outside. There are also free wine tastings on the side of the tasting room.
Come back next week for more Autumn in New England inspiration.
