Destination weddings have become very popular over the past few years. One of my favorite wedding trends is the more under rated destination engagement shoot. I do not keep it a secret that I believe every couple deserves amazing engagement images. Often, the engagement shoot are the only professional photos taken of a couple before (and even after) they are married. If you cannot afford a destination wedding (or would rather keep the ceremony closer to home for other reasons), you may want to consider a destination engagement shoot.
My number one reason that you should have a destination engagement session is to celebrate the beauty and unique personal story of your love together. Every couple has that place, that feeling, that describes who they are as a couple. This is the time to celebrate this big moment in your relationship. For Anna and Andy, that place was Viequez, Puerto Rico. Anna’s family has a home on the island and together they have made many beautiful memories over the years. This island is a part of their relationship and taking photos in some of their favorite places is a cherished gift that they will always have. Reason two: You will create new experiences together. It is not surprising that research has shown that couples who travel together have stronger bonds. Travel is both exciting and stressful and when a couple travels together well and overcome obstacles, their bond strengthens. Travelling before the wedding is a great way to escape wedding planning stress and make plans for a future outside of the wedding day. In a way, it is a metaphor for the journey into marriage you are about to take. Reason three: Experiences are truly more meaningful than things. Long after the wedding is over, you will have the memories to carry with you for the rest of your lives. Couples who spend money on experiences instead of material items are happier, healthier, and better at solving marriage disputes. You might regret spending money on that new television, but you will never regret that amazing vacation you took. Robby and Mary Catherine first met in Disney world! By having their engagement shoot in Disney they were able to reflect on their relationship, unwind from all the wedding planning, have fun, and get some great photos to always remember this special time in their lives. Reason four: Carpe diem! Seize the day! You only live once. This is an incredible opportunity to go some place you have always wanted to go (or return to) before other obligations get in the way. Kassondra and Ian wanted their engagement shoot to be in their favorite town, Newport, Rhode Island. You don’t have to travel too far for your own destination engagement shoot. Sometimes the best destinations are a simple road trip away. Reason five: The most obvious reason why you may want to consider a destination engagement is for the images, of course! When you travel for your engagement session you have the opportunity to get incredible photographs that you could not take at home.
