Magnolia Syrup | Spring Floral Syrup Recipe

This was my first try making Magnolia Syrup and I did not want to share the recipe until I knew that it was just right. Even though the magnolias have just left us. this syrup can be made with any edible flowers such as lavender, dandelions, lilacs, roses, and so much more. Floral syrups are a distinct flavor that may not be for everyone, nut if you are a fan of other floral flavors this is for you.

What is a floral syrup used for?

You can use a floral syrup for all kinds of things. You can sweeten your tea, iced tea, lemonade, as a cordial, or even to make mocktails and cocktails using the syrup like a simple syrup. Floral syrups like Magnolia syrup are great as sweeteners, used like a regular syrup on your pancakes, or even drizzled on top of ice cream.

The Recipe

For this recipe, all you need is one cup of natural sugar, one cup of water, and one cup of washed magnolia petals (or edible flower petals of your choosing) without the center or the stems. You can also double the recipe for a larger bottle if you intend to use it often this spring or bring to a gathering.

First bring your sugar and water to a boil and then turn the temperature down and allow it to simmer as you add your clean flower petals.

Recipes I have seen vary on timing, but I like to allow my petals to simmer for forty minutes on low instead of twenty or overnight. Once your petals have simmered on low (not on high and stirring occassionally as you do not want to burn the sugar or the petals), set them aside to cool.

Once cool to the touch, use a strainer or a nut bag to remove the petals. Once cool, bottle and store in the fridge. recipes I have seen said this can last for a year in the fridge, but I do not trust this completely. Use your discretion. A friend recommended using a teaspoon of vodka to extend the shelf life. I do not include it in this recipe, but you are welcome to add it is you feel it would be benficial. After removing the flowers you can also continue to simmer if you would like your syrup to be thicker.
