Simple Retro Summer To Autumn Style

Trends come and go, but my fashion sense remains pretty timeless. Sure, there are several trends I like to jump on (florals, gingham and high waisted skirts and jeans for example), but to be honest, I tend to love the “trends” I wear way before they are deemed cool and I love them long after they go. For example, large sun hats were very uncool when I was in college but I loved them because they protected my skin form the sun and I liked the classic vibes they gave me at the beach. Was I the only one wearing them and feeling very self conscious? Yes. But now they’re “Instagram cool” and young women wear them everywhere. So long story short, wear what makes you happy because trends come and go but personal style lasts. It doesn’t matter what other people think if you feel good about yourself. Wear what you want.

One brand I love for their sustainability and their timeless style and quality is Simple Retro. They’re not a perfect sustainable brand (I have heard that they also sell some items on Shein and their clothing is sourced in numerous locations including China), but they do keep to their promise of smaller seasonal collections, removing them from the fast fashion bandwagon. By having less items available they are able to maintain some semblance of sustainability and focus more on materials and quality. Their clothing is well made and durable, which means it will last longer and will not need to be replaced.

Their timeless retro inspired designs mean that they will also not go obsolete with most trends. A majority of their clothing is based off of the 1940s era. Simple and classic. The best part is that many of their pieces mix and match perfectly for transitioning between seasons. These blouses and dresses perfectly transition from summer to autumn.

Most modern trends I tend to ignore, but I’m always there for a floral print, a vintage denim jacket, hair claws, a large sunhat, and puff sleeves. But most importantly, I love timeless classics that never go out of style like a white button up blouse and vintage inspired pieces. I love fashion, but I do hate fast fashion and what it represents. It seems like almost all fashion is fast fashion these days. I try to avoid the heavy hitters that sell very thin low quality pieces, have bad environmental practices, and exploit people and their workers. -Brands like Zaful, Forever 21 (although in college I did love Forever21 because it was all I could afford), and Primark to name a few. But I’m not wealthy so shopping the completely sustainable brands like Reformation, Doen, or Christy Dawn is often out of my budget. Which is why I really appreciate brands that are doing their best, have limited slow fashion collections, and create high quality pieces that are meant to last. Simple Retro is one of those brands.

Simple Retro creates small batch collections every month or season instead of listing hundreds of new items weekly or daily. Their collections are very small and the quality is very high. They are made to last. Many of their pieces are often a part of their collections for well over a year so their turnover is much slower and their environmental impact is smaller. The prices are a bit higher as they are a more ethical brand, but it is still affordable. And with pieces meant to last they are well worth the investment. Most of all, I adore their classic retro designs and attention to detail.

-Like these shorts for example.

I kind of feel like a Girl Scout in these shorts. Or a 1940’s explorer. They’re dressy enough to wear to the office and casual enough to wear on the daily.

This outfit pictured here is an older season, but I will be linking similar items.

A note on sizing:

The brand itself is not completely consistent between items as each has a unique shape. The quality of the materials and the styles are lovely, but the sizing inconsistence needs some work. That being said, they are often accurate with their sizing guide so be sure to look up each item’s measurements before clicking add to cart.

I highly suggest checking the measurements for each item individually before selecting your size to ensure a proper fit. For example, I usually order an XS or S for shorts, but in the skort I am size small and when I ordered the Aimee shorts I was a size medium. While I’m typically a size small for Simple Retro dresses, I also have ordered a small that would not zip and I ended up returning it and ordering a large. For blouses I have been an extra-small, a small, and a medium. Their measurements are pretty accurate as listed, but be sure to read them for each item before ordering.

I’m not perfect, but I do try to be mindful of what I consume and the clothing brands I choose to support. Do you love Simple Retro? Share your favorite clothing brands in the comments below. I’m always interested in learning about new sustainable brands.
