The many lighthouses of the East coast have become an iconic part of New England’s aesthetic and the Nubble Lighthouse in York Maine is perhaps one of the most iconic of them all. Sunset at the Nubble Lighthouse is simply breathtaking, in part because it sits close to the shore, but on a small island isolated from the crowds who stand across the shore to look on towards it as the light begins to shine at sunset as a beacon for incoming boats. Completed July 1, 1879, The Nubble Lighthouse has watched over Maine’s coast for one hundred and forty years.
At the end of our spontaneous day trip to Kennebunkport, we decided to stop by the Nubble Lighthouse on our way home. The sun was low in the sky as we were about to leave, but then we saw the vibrant purple hues painting the sky and made the decision to stay to watch the sunset in its entirety. Before the sun goes down the sunlight reflects brightly off of the the white building and lighthouse, but after the sun sets below the horizon you’ll have a perfect view with a colorful sky.
