There are a few foods that represent New England, but nothing like a warm, buttery, and delicious lobster roll. When summer time comes around, you will find me splurging on a lobster roll or two along the Connecticut shoreline. With summer almost over, I knew I had to make this excursion. It is not summer in Connecticut without a good lobster roll. If you agree, you will enjoy the compilation of the cutest and yummiest lobster roll joints I have found.
Many restaurants sell “New England styled lobster rolls,” which are filled with mayo, cucumbers, and lettuce, but in my opinion, the only way to have a New England lobster roll is without all the fillings: pure New England lobster with melted butter on a toasted roll. There is no other way. I have gone on a hunt to find you the best lobster roll in Connecticut.

My personal favorite:
There are many amazing places to get a great lobster roll in CT, but my favorite by far is at the Main Street Grille in Niantic because of the large portions and delicious taste. When I first tried their lobster roll, I was concerned about the price because many lobster rolls come in tiny servings and they are usually one of the higher priced options on the menu and you get very little in return. Not at the Main Street Grille! I will always remember that first lobster roll because I was so impressed with the generous portions and they also gave me the option between the mayo version and the pure buttery version. (Of course I went with hot and buttery instead of cold and mayonnaised!) It is a meal that won’t leave you hungry after. It also came with great cole slaw and fries as a side and the meal was very satisfying. We also had a great view from the top deck where we were seated on a nice day so I give them extra bonus points for a beautiful atmosphere. We watched as the train and sailboats went by below.
(The lobster roll above is from Lobster Landing. I didn’t have my camera with me when I ordered a lobster roll at the Main Street Grille.) What are your favorite New England casual outdoor dining and lobster roll spots? I would love to hear all about them in the comments below.
