Welcome to the Smithy Café in New Preston, Connecticut. We live just miles away from this lovely little New England town and we thought it was about time that we visited the Smithy Café on 9 Main. The Smithy Café is also owned by the Smithy Market, located directly across from the café in an old blacksmith’s shop that has been refurbished. I promise to share more about the market in another post. You can learn more about the Smithy Café, Smithy Market and Loft Gallery here: https://www.thesmithystore.com/.
At the end of 2022, I promised to share more in my Connecticut Charm series in the upcoming year. When I started this blog I often shared local Connecticut places. It started in part because I am always taking photographs and it is a fun way to share my pictures, because Matthew and I are always going on local adventures, and because so many locals I knew were always complaining that there was “nothing to do.” I happen to think that Connecticut has an abundance of places to explore. Connecticut is quite the haven for foodies, artists, and nature lovers. There are so many parks, museums and galleries, biking trails, flower fields, farms and farmers markets, indoor and outdoor sports, lakes and beaches, theaters, and cafes and restaurants. There is a little bit of everything for everyone.
I have not stopped exploring new places, but I have not been blogging them as frequently as I used to. This year I hope to go back to my blog beginnings by bringing my camera along when I visit a new or favorite place. The Smithy Café is a perfect place to start. I took along my Fujifilm X 100V compact travel camera and my cell phone for this local adventure. Matthew didn’t tell me where we were going, but I knew we were trying a new place for lunch.
This lovely old building with it’s front porch and blue shutters is eye catching and every time Matthew and I drive by we say to ourselves that we should go some time soon. That some time soon finally arrived this past Sunday.
More than a café, The Smithy Café also features soups, sandwiches, and lunch specials. We both ordered the Grilled cheese and soup combo, although next time I think I must try the burrata grilled cheese.
The café was a full house. I quickly snapped these interior photos as people were coming and going so I would not intrude on anyone’s private lunch. A friend of mine told me that she met the actor Peter Gallagher here.
Old photos of New Preston adorn the walls and outside the window you can see New Preston Falls. There are two outdoor seating areas for eating outdoors on a warm day.
Matthew ordered the espresso and I had a maccha latte.
From outside the window we watched a hawk on the hunt. He found lunch around the same time ours arrived to the table.
After our meal we took a quick walk across the street to the falls.
The Smithy Café will quickly become one of our local favorites. I cannot wait to return to check out the Smithy Market across the street and to dine in the outdoor seating area when the seasons change.
