Two New Ways To Shop Your Own Closet

You might have heard the term, “shop your closet.” It is pretty straightforward; instead of going to a store for new clothes, use what you already own. For a while this method might work in keeping you from spending money and helps you to appreciate what you have. But what happens when you are tempted to shop anyway or when simply looking at your closet lacks to inspire? I have two new methods to help you refresh your wardrobe with the clothes that you already own.

Here are two new ways to shop your closet:

One. You don’t have to avoid your favorite style influencers, blogs and fashion magazines to keep yourself from shopping. Many of us see an outfit we love online, on a friend or blogger or in a magazine and feel the need to buy it, but what if instead we went to our closets and tried to recreate the look with what we already have? It doesn’t have to be a perfect replica to pull off the new look with old clothes. Chances are, even if you don’t have the same outfits, you have what it takes to make something inspired by that look. And don’t forget to mix and match your accessories.

In the spring I see a lot of spring striped dresses paired with straw hats. This is a photo I saw on Pinterest:

I styled this classic dress in my closet with a hat and basket bag I already owned. They’re not identical, but they are similar looks and fit the style perfectly.

Two. Love what you have, but lack inspiration? Or own a unique piece of clothing (such as a fringe jacket or a neck scarf) and don’t know how to style it? Take an item from your closet and look it up to see how other people style similar articles of clothing or accessories. For example, if I wanted to style a pair of high waisted jeans I could look up “style high waisted jeans” on Google images, Pinterest, or Instagram and see what photos come up. I might see it styled with an 90’s inspired band t-shirt and a leather jacket, with a more western-American motif such as paired with a fringe jacket, with an oversized sweater tucked into the front, or styled with a blouse and high heeled shoes. You can style a pair of high waisted jeans in countless ways, just as you may discover you can with nearly any item in your closet. How can you mix and match your clothes? Then recreate those looks with what you have in my closet.
