I have always loved candles from the soft scent of natural beeswax to the glow of a candle flame on a cozy autumn night. Beeswax candles are sustainable and the most eco-friendly candle option out there. Not only are they better for the environment (as well as for your own health), they have a long burn time and they smell heavenly.
I have made beeswax rolled candled before, but in case you have not, I thought I would share this little home project that you can follow along and make yourself. Rolled beeswax candles are the easiet candles to make at home when you’re just starting your candle making journey because they are affordable, they require few materials, and you do not need a wax melting pot to make them. These candles are also child-friendly for young creatives.
What you will need:
You will need beeswax sheets, candle wicks, scissors, and you might need a hair dryer to warm the wax as needed. You can find the materials separately, but there are also many lovely starter kits, like this kit here by Waxing Moonshine.
You can also gather nice ribbons or papers to use to wrap your candles if you plan to make them as gifts. Other decorative pieces like beads, charms, cinnamon, leaves, flowers, cinnamon sticks, or dried apple or orange slices also make lovely decorations when you tie up your candles.
Let’s begin
You will need your wax sheets to be room temperature or the wax will break when you roll the candles. You can leave it out in a warm room, gently warm it with your hands, or careful warm it with a hair dryer. You will want to be careful not to melt the wax though.
Beeswax smells so good!
The sheets I am working with are 8.5″ long so my candle wicks will be cut to 9″ in length. Depending on your wax length you will want to make sure you have at least 1/4th of an inch in additional length for your wick.
Once you have your wick, place it along the long edge of your wax and gently pinch it in place with the corner of the wax sheet.
When your wick is in place, gently roll your wax around the wick, careful to keep the roll even.
You may need to gently warm the wax in your hands if it is too cold to roll to prevent cracking. To seal the candle edges to the candle, gently warm the outer edge with your fingers and gently push the wax together.
You can also roll the candles against the shorter edge instead of the longer edge for a shorter candle or even roll another sheet over a single candle two make it wider. You can even create your own pillar candles by adding a few extra sheets to make your candle much wider.
Now you have beautiful eco-friendly candles to use at home or give as gifts.
With the holidays coming, these lovely candles make the perfect holiday present and add a beautiful homemade glow to your home.
